Benue Govt. partners UNICEF to ensure safety of school environment for Benue child By TYAV SAM TYAV, Makurdi – The Benue State Government has entered into partnership with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to ensure the safety of school environment for school children in Benue State. The State Commissioner for Education and Knowledge Management, Dr Fredrick Ikyaan, who restated government’s commitment on the matter, said government would not wait for the challenge of insecurity to go out of hand before action would be taken. Speaking in Makurdi while inaugurating the safe school steering committee for UNICEF, Enugu field office in collaboration with the Benue State Ministry of Etducation and Knowledge Management, Dr Ikyaan, said modalities for the reactivation of the state rapid response centre for the protection of schools and host communities from violent attacks would commence soon. The Commissioner expressed worry that insecurity which was once seeing as a foreign culture has become a daily occurrence in Nigeria, with Benue suffering more, explaining further that the rapid response centre is one of the requirements for the implementation of federal government safe school programme across the country. The commissioner informed that the present administration has intended to achieve so much with implementation of the initiative hence the formation of the steering committee, stating that the readiness of the state and federal government as well as commitment of implementing partners such as UNICEF has given hope to the success of the programme. The Education Specialist UNICEF field office Enugu, Dr Agatha Nzeribe in her remarks disclosed that the programme was targeting about 600 schools in Benue identified to be at more risk while unveiling the programme. The UNICEF education specialist, who commented on minimum standard of operation, said the steering committee would serve as an embodiment of the technical support that would pilot the state action plan for the success of the initiative and commended UNICEF for the choice of Benue to benefit from the programme.
