Gunmen suspected to be bandits have unleashed terror in Ungwan Mai Lalle market of Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing 20 persons and injured 30 others before carting away with foodstuffs, locals confirmed.
The incident according to locals happened on Friday.
A former chairman of the local government, who spoke on condition of anonymity said, the bandits might be out of food, hence going after markets in search of food.
Though, he declined comments on the number of casualties, it was however gathered from locals that the bandits suspected to be Fulanis shot sporadically into the market killing 20 persons and injuring many others who are receiving treatment at Sabon Birni General Hospital.
The Sokoto State Police Command spokesperson, ASP Abubakar Sanusi could not be reach for confirmation at the time of filing this report. However, one, Ibrahim who claimed to have lost two family members said, the attackers are heartless.
Sabon Birni is one of the eight LGAs of Sokoto East Senatorial district that has continue to suffer consistent banditry attacks.
Recalled that few days ago, angry youths who constituted themselves into vigilantee popularly known as “Yan Sakai” in one of the local government aeas of Sokoto East Senatorial districts took their anger into the market and opened fire at any Fulani on sight.
The youths were said to have taken the action in reprisal of the serial attacks on their people by bandits suspected to be of Fulanis.
