Over 27 grassroots football clubs from across the three senatorial districts of Anambra are to participate in the inaugural edition of ‘My Anambra’ Super 8 Football tournament billed to begin on Feb. 1, the state Football association, the organisers, have announced.
Oliver Ndigwe, Chairman, Organising Committee, said the competition would hold in the three zone concurrently, with the two top teams from each zone qualifying for the final round, alongside the best two losing sides in the playoffs, making the Super 8 proper by March.
He disclosed that the sponsors of the competition, Aspire FC, an amateur side in the State, would provide free medical test for the participating teams and their officials, as the competition would be held under strict compliance with COVID-19 protocols as well as standard football rules and regulations.
Ndigwe said winners would go home with N500,000, N400,000 and N200,000 as first, second and third prizes, respectively, as well as a National Division Two slot for the eventual winner.
“The Super 8 is a flagship grassroots football tournament in Anambra. It is an opportunity for one of the amateur sides to get a slot to play in the National Division Two (NLO).
“For this edition, we have 27 teams, 13 teams from Anambra Central, eight from Anambra North and six from Anambra South senatorial districts, I must say it is a good number to start with,” he said.
He called on the participating teams to give budding footballers the opportunity to show their skills, as it was essentially designed for unknown players.
The Brand Manager of Aspire FC, Chidimma Ezeaso, said the competition was part of the club’s efforts to ensure that football activities thrived in Anambra, and to give more clubs the opportunity to advance to the national level.
Ezeaso said Aspire FC would continue to support the growth of football in the state by providing opportunities for talented players.(NAN)
