National Sports Commission (NSC) has announced the commencement of the World Rugby Technical Development Programme in Abuja as part of efforts to strengthen the technical capacity of rugby coaches, referees and officials across Nigeria.
The commission disclosed this in a post on its official social media platforms on Saturday, stating that the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation’s Coaching and Refereeing Seminar/Retreat began on Thursday, September 10, 2026, at the MKO Abiola Stadium, Package ‘A’, Abuja.
According to the NSC, the three-day World Rugby-led capacity-building programme is scheduled to run until September 12, with daily sessions holding from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
The programme features Level 1 and Level 2 Coaching and Match Officiating courses, as well as training in First Aid in Rugby, Intensive Care in Rugby (ICIR), Safeguarding Essentials and technical assessments.
The commission said the initiative is designed to enhance the knowledge and skills of coaches, match officials and other technical personnel, in line with global rugby standards.
It added that the National Sports Commission remains committed to supporting programmes that strengthen technical capacity and accelerate the development of rugby in Nigeria.
The NSC noted that such initiatives are expected to improve the quality of coaching, officiating and player welfare, while contributing to the long-term growth of the sport in the country.
