Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has commemorated the 2026 World Literacy Day with the theme, _“Literacy for People, the Planet and Prosperity (PPP).”_
The two-day event aimed at promoting literacy as a vital tool for personal development, economic empowerment, environmental sustainability and regional development had the State Director, Engr. Godknows Alamieyeseigha represented by the Head of Department, Education, Health and Social Services (EHSS), Dr Finine Caroline Pinaowei, commend the Commission for organising the programme, noting that the annual observance of World Literacy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of literacy and the need to equip individuals with the knowledge and skills required to contribute meaningfully to society.
Resource Persons, Mrs. Dau-Eredei Ernest and Mrs Lydia Solomon noted that the planet faces numerous environmental challenges and that literacy empowers individuals to understand, care for and protect their environment.
They explained that literacy literacy goes beyond the classroom and encompasses skills needed to navigate everyday life highlighting communication literacy, financial literacy, environmental literacy and health literacy as essential areas that individuals should develop in order to contribute positively to society.
This programme aligns with NDDC’s mandate and recognises the critical role literacy plays in the human, social and infrastructural development of the Niger Delta region.
