Gunmen attack military base in Oyo, burn patrol vehicle, building as military launches investigation

Unknown gunmen have attacked a military outpost along the Igbeti-Igboho Road in Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, setting a patrol vehicle and part of the facility on fire.

The attack occurred between 5:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2026, according to a security update from the Oorelope Local Government Command.

The command said it received a distress call reporting that armed men had invaded the Operation Burst base. Security operatives were immediately mobilised to the scene alongside personnel from other security agencies.

However, the attackers had fled before the security team arrived.

Preliminary findings showed that the gunmen allegedly stormed the base in large numbers and opened fire on security personnel on duty.

Security operatives later carried out a search of the surrounding area in an effort to track down the attackers, but no arrests were made.

The security update stated that no lives were lost during the attack.

It, however, confirmed that the attackers set fire to a block within the military outpost and a patrol vehicle, destroying both.

The Oyo State Police Command also confirmed the incident with, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, saying that the attack took place at the military outpost along the Igboho-Igbeti Road in the Oke-Ogun area of the state.

“It was an army outpost along Igboho/Igbeti road. No life was lost but some properties damaged,” he said.

Security agencies have commenced an investigation to identify those behind the attack.

The incident comes amid renewed security concerns in the area and occurred a day before the resumption of the new academic session across Oyo State.
