National Assembly has forwarded the Constitution Alteration Bill seeking the establishment of state police services to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration and approval.
The Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, disclosed that the bill was transmitted to the state legislatures on Wednesday, September 16, 2026.
He said the National Assembly expects the assemblies to consider the proposed amendment and communicate their resolutions within 30 days of receiving the bill.
Ogunlana, however, explained that the 30-day period is only an administrative timeline meant to speed up the process and is not a constitutional deadline.
He stressed that the National Assembly respects the constitutional powers and independence of the State Houses of Assembly in deciding on the proposed amendment.
According to him, the Constitution requires that any bill seeking to alter its provisions must receive the approval of at least two-thirds of the 36 State Houses of Assembly before it can become law.
The State Police Bill was passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives weeks ago as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture and address rising security challenges across the country.
The National Assembly said it would move to the next stage of the constitutional amendment process after receiving the resolutions from the state assemblies.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to due process, cooperation with state legislatures and strict compliance with the provisions of the Constitution.
