The arrested suspects
Borno State Police Command has explained the circumstances surrounding the arrest and prosecution of five suspects in Maiduguri, following public reactions over claims that they were detained for wearing T-shirts with the inscription “Tinubu Must Go.”
The Command said the suspects were arrested on September 25, 2026, during a routine patrol by police officers around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri.
According to the police, the five suspects were allegedly involved in activities capable of causing public disturbance and were found with items including suspected Indian hemp, suspected D5 tablets, a shisha pot, a scissors and two T-shirts carrying the political message.
The Command said the suspects were taken through preliminary investigation, during which their statements were obtained before the matter was filed before a competent court.
Clarifying the controversy surrounding the arrest, the Borno Police Command said the action was not based on any political opinion or affiliation but followed allegations of public disturbance, breach of peace, thuggery and possession of suspected drug substances.
“The Nigeria Police Force is a professional, non-partisan institution and does not discriminate against persons on the basis of political affiliation or viewpoint,” the Command stated.
The police added that it remains committed to protecting fundamental human rights, ensuring due process and maintaining accountability in the discharge of its duties.
The Command also urged members of the public to rely on verified information and allow the court to determine the matter based on the facts and evidence presented before it.
The controversy started after reports emerged that five young men were arrested in Maiduguri over T-shirts bearing the words “Tinubu Must Go,” a slogan critical of President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The latest clarification by the police comes amid growing public discussions on freedom of expression, political criticism and the responsibility of security agencies to maintain public order.
The Borno State Police Command said it remains committed to professionalism, impartiality and the protection of lives and property across the state.
