National Leader of NDC, Senator Henry Dickson
Former Governor of Bayelsa State and National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Seriake Dickson, has called on Nigerians to remain committed to unity, democracy and good governance as the country marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Dickson, in a message to Nigerians on Wednesday, said the anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey, honour the sacrifices of its founding fathers and renew commitment towards building a better nation.
He said Nigeria’s future depends on strengthening democratic values, promoting justice, equity and equal opportunities for all citizens.
According to him, “our independence reminds us of the enduring responsibility to honour the sacrifices of our founding fathers and all those who have contributed to the growth of our nation, while renewing our commitment to building a Nigeria founded on justice, equity, unity, democracy, equal opportunities, and respect for the dignity of every citizen.”
The former Bayelsa governor expressed confidence in the ability of Nigerians to overcome current challenges, describing the resilience and diversity of the country’s people as major strengths.
“Despite the challenges we face, I remain confident in the resilience of our people and the great potential of our country. Our diversity is our strength, and our collective responsibility is to preserve our democracy, strengthen our institutions, and build a nation where every Nigerian can live with dignity and hope,” he said.
Dickson also joined Bayelsans in celebrating the 30th anniversary of the creation of Bayelsa State, describing the state as an important contributor to Nigeria’s development.
“As a proud son and former Governor of Bayelsa State, I join my fellow Bayelsans in celebrating this important milestone and honouring the contributions of our people to our nation,” he stated.
He expressed optimism that Bayelsa would continue to grow and make meaningful contributions to the progress of Nigeria.
The NDC national leader further said the party remains committed to providing a platform for national renewal as Nigeria prepares for another phase of its democratic journey.
“As we approach another important moment in our democratic journey, the Nigeria Democratic Congress remains committed to providing a platform for national renewal and presenting candidates at every level who are committed to service and good governance,” Dickson said.
He urged Nigerians to continue believing in the country and work together towards achieving a stronger, united and prosperous nation.
“On this Independence Day, I urge us all to keep faith in Nigeria and continue working together for the stronger, more united and prosperous nation we desire,” he added.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960, while Bayelsa State was created on October 1, 1996, following its separation from the old Rivers State. Since its creation, the state has remained a key contributor to Nigeria’s oil and gas sector and national development.
