Late Nafiu Baba-Ahmed
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Mallam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed, describing him as a respected lawyer, scholar and advocate of peace whose contributions to Nigeria will not be forgotten.
In a condolence message on Thursday, Obi sympathised with the Baba-Ahmed family, the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, the people of Kaduna State and the wider Muslim community over the loss.
He described the late Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria as a man who devoted his life to service, justice and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
Obi said Mallam Nafiu combined legal knowledge, scholarship and administrative experience in serving the country with commitment and distinction.
According to him, “Mallam Nafiu was a lawyer, scholar and administrator who served with dedication and distinction. He was also a bridge-builder who believed in justice, peaceful coexistence and the importance of bringing people together.”
The former Anambra State governor noted that the late Islamic leader’s death came at a time when Nigeria needs more people committed to unity, dialogue and justice.
He said, “His passing is a loss to his family, the Council, Kaduna State, the Muslim Ummah and our nation. At a time when Nigeria needs more voices for peace, understanding and justice, his absence will be deeply felt.”
Obi prayed for strength and comfort for everyone grieving the respected religious leader.
He added, “I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family, colleagues and all who mourn him. May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest, and give his loved ones the strength and comfort to bear this painful loss.”
Mallam Nafiu Baba-Ahmed served as Secretary-General of the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria, where he played an important role in promoting Islamic values, justice and dialogue on national issues. He was widely respected for his calm approach to leadership and his efforts to encourage peaceful coexistence across religious and ethnic divides.
His death has attracted tributes from prominent Nigerians, with many describing him as a principled leader whose commitment to peace, justice and national unity left a lasting impact on the country.
