A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in Edo State, prompting a police investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The incident happened on Monday, October 5, in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area, where the lecturer had reportedly checked into a hotel.
According to the Edo State Police Command, Dr. Uwuigbe had engaged the services of a 21-year-old woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob, before the tragic incident occurred.
Police said the lecturer later asked the woman to step out and buy water for him, but when she returned, she found him lying motionless in the room and immediately raised the alarm.
Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said: “The woman returned to the room and discovered Uwuigbe lying lifeless, prompting the report to the police.”
As part of the investigation, the police have arrested and detained the woman, as well as the hotel owner and manager, to help investigators determine what happened before the lecturer’s death.
The command said investigations are ongoing and urged the public to allow detectives to complete their work before drawing conclusions.
Dr. Uwuigbe’s body has been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital Mortuary pending the outcome of the investigation.
The tragic incident has left colleagues, students and residents of Ekpoma shocked, with many awaiting the findings of the police investigation into what led to the lecturer’s sudden death.
Meanwhile, Ambrose Alli University confirmed that the deceased was a member of its academic staff but stressed that the incident happened outside the university and had no connection with its official activities.
The university also clarified that the 21-year-old woman involved in the incident is not a student of the institution.
Authorities say further details will be made public as the investigation progresses.
