Hundreds of armed bandits have attacked a joint military base camp in Sabon Birni Local Government Area of Sokoto State, killing yet to be ascertained number of personnel.
The bandits were also said to have attacked Katsira village same day shooting sporadically leading to the death of two persons with two others sustaining gunshots before leaving with three persons into the bush.
The security camp, codenamed “Burkusuma Camp” in Sabon Birni was strategically located at Dama village to help deliver timely response to distress calls by locals who have been under severe threats for a while now.
Recalled that Sabon Birni is one of the 8 Local Goverments in Sokoto East Senatorial Districts that have all continued to suffer banditry attacks.
Though, relevant security agencies could not confirm the attack at the time of filing this report. tt was, however, gathered from an official in one of the hospitals at the state metropolis that corpses of three Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) involved in the attack were deposited at their hospital morgue.
When contacted, The Sokoto State Police Command’s spokesperson, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, said he was not aware of the attack while the State Commissioner for Carriers and Security Matters, Colonel Garba Moyi (rtd) said the incident actually happened.
Confirming the ugly incident which was said to have happened on Friday, a local who preferred anonymity said, they learnt that bandits in their hundreds stormed the camp and opened fire at the officers from diverse directions.
Giving credence to the position held by the locals, former Chairman of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Engineer Idris Muhammad Gobir, said he gathered that the security camp in the place was attacked, adding that he cannot confirm the degree of casualty.
Locals further said the rampaging bandits burnt two patrol vehicles in the camp and went away with another which they used to convey food stuffs stolen from villagers.
It was also leanrt that security have been fortified in the general areas as locals confirmed seeing heavily armed battle ready personnel combing the entire area and beyond in search of the fleeing bandits.
