The Nigeria Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) on Thursday commissioned the first ever electric vehicle charging station in Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto State.
In his opening remarks at the occassion, Professor Abubakar Sani Sambo of the Faculty of Engineering (UDUS) and former Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on Energy Matters said the time has come for the federal government to think of alternative sources of revenue generation as the future of oil is glommy because of renewable energy.
He further noted that the most sustainable charging station as far as electric vehicles was concern is the solar.
On his part, The Director General of NADDC, Jelani Aliyu said the event marked the start of a new begining of sustainable technological development in Nigeria.

“Today is the start of a new era for Nigeria as it marks the realization of goverment quest to build a sustainable technolgy”.
Mr. Jelani while soliciting for further collaboration with the UDUS and other ivory tower’s across the country, said the vision and mission of NADDC is not just to enable the production of vehicles in Nigeria but also to produce the best most advanced technological vehicle in Nigeria.
“What we have just commssioned here today is the first 100 percent solar energy powered charging station in Nigeria”.
“The harsh weather in Sokoto and part of the north is often been seen as a reason for concern. But now, we have seen it as a blessing for us to extract and power our homes, offices and even industries”.
“We are partnering with three universities, UDUS, Lagos University and Nsuka. We are partnering with institutions of learning with the hope that it will help in advancing the cause of research”.
While stressing that Nigeria can power her economy exclusively with renewable energy, Jelani averred that by the time that is achieved the problems of power will become history in Nigeria.
“That will soon happen as our keying into renewable energy is the begining of a new era”.
To the institutions he said it’s an opportunity for them to utilize the very best in research to enable them come up with more advanced technologies in the automotive industry.
In his remarks, The Vice Chancellor of UDUS, Prof Lawal Bilbis represnted by the DVC Admin, Prof Ibrahim Magawata, maintained that the occasion is very important as far as the history of UDUS was concerned as it makes the first Electric vehicle charging station not just in the institution but Nigeria.
According to him, the DG of NADDC has thrown a challenge to tbe students for them to come up with more acceptable technolgy that will change the narrative of this country.
The VC further assured that the institution is working harder to collaborate with the NADDC towards achieving their dreams.
“We are hoping that these collaboration will know move this sector forward so that even in the remote villages they will be able to rely on the gift of nature for energy”.
While speaking on the successes recorded by the institution, the VC assured that UDUS would soon go on constant power supply within the institution, courtesy of solar energy.
