The Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has inaugurated The Enugu Unity Park, a tourist attraction and recreation area for public use.
Speaking on Saturday during the ceremony, Ugwuanyi said the development of the park was in line with his administration’s urban renewal campaign.
He said the project would provide the state with the opportunity to become the tourist hub of the country.
The governor said his administration through the development of Unity Park responded to a yawning gap in the Coal City way of life.
He explained that the park had a reinforced concrete pedestrian walkway measuring approximately 1.9 km, a monumental concrete roaring lion sculpture 42 feet high.
“It was widely believed that the sculpture of a giant roaring lion in the park currently challenges existing world records for lion sculpture.
“My administration has asked the world record organizations to review this and give us our rightful place in world history,” Ugwuanyi said.
Ugwuanyi pointed out that the serene ambience of the park makes it a good place to be, relax and reflect.
He therefore assured the public that his administration would ensure adequate maintenance and cleanliness of the park as well as the safety of visitors.
“Coal City’s tourism potential has been under-leveraged in the past and its vibe has been called into question as residents long for a new paradigm.
“Our administration responded to this gaping gap in the Coal City way of life by approving the development of Unity Park, Enugu, in October 2019,” Ugwuanyi said.
Earlier in his welcoming speech, State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr. Ugonna Ibe, congratulated Governor Ugwuanyi for the historic achievement in improving the status of Enugu State in the local and international tourism.
According to him, after the demise of the zoo and polo park, the state did not have an amusement park to satisfy the insatiable needs for relaxation of local and international tourists who visited Enugu.
Mr. Ibe argued that the newly developed park would help the state government attract tourists, diversify its economic base, and create abundant youth jobs. The event was attended by Nollywood stars and tourists from the state.
