The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has said that no Nigerian deserves to be in the country’s prisons, if the Federal Government could arrest, free and rehabilitate deadly criminals including Boko Haram insurgents and others terrorising the country.
Mazi Kanu said this on his Twitter handle on Tuesday, after armed men suspected to be members of the IPOB and Eastern Security Network attacked the Imo State Police Command and Nigeria Correctional Centre, both in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
NATIONAL ACCORD reports that at least 1,844 inmates had escaped following the attack on its custodial centre in Owerri, the Imo State capital, The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has said in a statement.
According to the statement by NCoS spokesman, Francis Enobore, the yet to be identified gunmen stormed the facility in the early hours of Monday 5th April 2021, gained entrance into the yard by using explosives to blast the administrative block.
The statement further notes that 35 inmates refused to escape while others fled.
No fewer than 1800 inmates and detainees were freed from both places.
Meanwhile, The IPOB leader has based his stance on the treatment received by some groups whom he said are set free and rehabilitated after they are arrested by authorities.
Mazi Kanu tweeted: “If Miyetti Allah terror herdsmen & other murderous #Fulani groups, including Boko Haram insurgents, can be arrested, freed and rehabilitated by this neo-colonial Fulanised @NGRPresident, then no single soul deserves to be in any prison in Nigeria. If you know you know! #UGM.”
