Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia has declared a 24-hour curfew on Ukum Local Government Area of the state with effect from 3.pm Wednesday, July 3, 2024.
The 24-hour curfew followed the grave security situation in the region that has led to the wanton destruction of property leading to instability of the area.
The Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media, Publicity and Strategic Communications, Solomon Iorpev, said the directive of the governor came through his deputy, Sam Ode.
It was alleged that herdsmen allegedly stormed the community and killed about six people and injured several others.
As further alleged, the youths in the area protested by blocking the road and destroying a lot of property including Benue Links park as well the property of the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Paul Biam.
The youths in the area, as alleged were angry with the Benue State Government because it was insensitive to the killings by the herdsmen.
But following the breakdown of law and order, the state government declared that “Beginning today, 3rd July 2024, a curfew be imposed on Ukum Local Government and environs beginning from 3PM to 3PM of tomorrow, 4th July 2024”.
“The curfew shall be observed from 6PM to 6AM beginning from tomorrow 4th of July 2024 untill further notice.’
The governor according to Iorpev has called for calm as security operatives have been deployed in their numbers to keep the peace in Ukum in particular and the Sankara region at large.
