The Sole Administrator of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Mr. Effiong Akwa, is alleged to have provided arms and utility vehicles to the youth in the Amamon Community who are up in arms against the Okpedi Community, both in Okobo Local Government area of Akwa Ibom State.
The escalating feud, which has led to unspecified loss of lives in the two communities, according to a native of the area who spoke on the basis of anonymity, is caused by the election of an indigene of the Okpedi Community into a councillorship position of the Okobo Local Government Area.
The source alleged that the councillorship position is run on rotational basis between the two communities and that this time around, “it is the turn of the Okpedi Community which has produced and elected their son for the position but the NDDC Sole Administrator feeling that with his new status, he could manipulate the existing practice to the advantage of Amamon which he belongs, has purportedly provided the arms, vehicles and other logistics to his people to cause mayhem”.
“As I talk with you now, there is heavy shooting in the two communities with many casualties especially on the part of Okpedi. We call on the security agencies and the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Edom Emmanuel to quickly intervene in the escalating crisis before it gets out of hand”, he appealed.
He wondered why Mr. Akwa, instead of bring development to the impoverished community with his new status, would resort to causing mayhem and inflicting pains on his people.
