Mr Silas Nwoha, the new Editor-in-Chief of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), has assured the staff of the Editorial Department of an improved working condition in the bid to return the agency to its glorious days.
Nwoha made the pledge on Friday in Abuja while addressing members of staff in his maiden speech following the appointment.
He urged Reporters and Editors to rise to the challenge of returning NAN to the status of being the flagship of the media industry in Nigeria.
He pledged that welfare issues would be a major priority under his watch, urging all and sundry to support his stewardship.
He further urged the workers to eschew all manners of division that could create the impression that the workforce was working at cross purpose.
“We should develop interest and make the difference. If everybody does his or her own work, things will work well. We shall all get our entitlements. Our department is viable to generate income,” he said.
In a related development, Nwoha described Alhaji Shittu Obassa, an Assistant Editor-in-Chief in the Multimedia department of the agency, who retired from Civil Service, as “a philosopher”.
According to him, every speech by Obassa is full of wisdom and deep knowledge.
He advised Shittu to judiciously use enough skills he had acquired in NAN to ensure a brighter future for himself and his family.
Nwoha’s comments were followed by a lot of encomiums from many colleagues.
In his contribution, Mr Ephraim Sheyin, Director/Head of Operations, Lagos, also described Obassa as a “thorough fellow”.
According to him, Obassa worked meticulously to ensure that his thoughts are precise.
“Obassa likes to be exact and maintains it. He has capacity to think of something practical every time,” he said.
On her part, Mrs Hajia Sani, Head of Multimedia Unit, said Obassa liked to work comprehensively.
She commended active ideas Obassa generated that had added value to the multimedia Unit and the agency in general.
Mrs Ese Ekama, Head of National Desk, also described Obassa as a receptive fellow, who is always ready to learn and change for the better.
She said Obassa’s good nature had helped him to establish good relationship with others.
Responding, Obassa thanked all his colleagues for all their good gestures, saying he had no regret working for NAN which he described as a product and a brand that is second to none in the media industry. (NAN)
