By PAUL ADAJI, Abuja –
Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, has announced the dissolution of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).
The announcement by the Police boss at the Force Headquarters Abuja (also known as Louis Edet House) around 1.30 pm, came in the wake of growing protests across Nigeria over alleged brutality by members of the SARS.
According Adamu, dissolution affects all SARS units in all 36 state commands as well as that of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
An update on the official twitter handle of the Police also directed all officers and men currently serving in the disbanded SARS unit to be redeployed with immediate effect.
It added that new policing arrangements would be unveiled in due course to address the offences of armed robbery and other violent crimes.
