The Kwara State Government has reacted to an article written by veteran journalist, Bayo Onanuga and published by Premium Times on May 19, 2021. Mr. Onanuga had in the article written that the state has refused to pay the national minimum wage to its workers.
In a statement issued by the state government on Friday and signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq, Rafiu Ajakaiyeine, said while it appreciate the effort of Mr. Onanuga to weigh in on the national minimum wage debate, there is need for a sincere reality check before reaching a conclusion.
“We say emphatically that his claim the state has refused to pay the national minimum wage is not correct. As from the first quarter of 2021, no government worker earns below 30,000, the statement reads in part”.
The government, however, agreed that the debate over the national minimum wage
and issues related to it must be embraced with open mind devoid of politics, harassment or name-calling.
In the statement, the government further said that reform of the current system is inevitable and urgent, adding that apart from earning decent salaries as workers, they also need basic infrastructures
