The Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) says 120,000 “Smart Meters’’ will be installed for electricity consumers in Cross River to improve power supply.
The Acting Manager, Corporate Communications, PHED, Mrs Chioma Aninwe, announced the plan in a statement she issued on Saturday in Calabar.
Mrs Aninwe said that the move was part of the agreement entered with the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) aimed at taking power supply in Cross River to the next level.
She added that the agreement was principally aimed at meeting the demands of customers.
The manager said PHED would also collaborate with NDPHC to supply 100MW of excess power from Odukpani Power Plant to Calabar metropolis exclusively.
According to her, the network optimisation will be carried out in order to rehabilitate the network and increase its capacity to ensure that it can meet 24 hours supply to Calabar.
“The projects have already begun and one has been completed, which is the construction of one unit of 15MVA (1×15 MVA) at Adiabo in Odukpani Local Government Area”.
“PHED is also to construct a sub-station at Akpabuyo Local Government Area, all aimed at showing commitment to resolving the community’s electricity issues”.
“PHED in Calabar has already flagged-off the awareness campaign on the new development,” she explained.
