A pregnant cashier with Access Bank, Ketu/Ikorodu branch in Lagos state, allegedly collapsed after she was handed her sack letter.
The incident happened on Saturday.
Access Bank, which formally acquired the defunct Diamond Bank last year, announced last week it planned to carry out mass retrenchment that could involve upto 70% of its workers, in apparent response to the negative effect of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on Nigeria’s already weak economy.
The pregnant cashier is said to be one of the many workers of the Bank who have been marked for sack in a retrenchment exercise that would affect about 75% of its workers.
A report by Sahara Reporters said the cashier, identified as Taiwo, who was carrying a 3-month pregnancy, collapsed and feinted after receiving news of her sack from the bank.
An unnamed colleague of the sacked pregnant cashier was quoted by Sahara Reporters to have narrated how it all happened:
“Her name is Taiwo. When she got the news today, she collapsed. There were two of them affected by the mass retrenchment from Ketu/Ikorodu Road branch, as of now. We will get to know more on Monday about others who were affected. The Taiwo lady is about two or three months pregnant.
“When she heard the news, she collapsed. It was friends and family around her that rushed her to the hospital.”
