The late Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Lagos State Chairman, Dr Adegbola Dominic, has been laid to rest at his residence in Igando, Lagos State.
Dominic’s remains were buried after a funeral service at St. John’s Catholic Church, Igando.
Recalled that Dominic died on Aug. 25 during a brief illness.
To immortalise the name of the late medical doctor-turned politician, his family has set up the Michael Dominic Foundation.
Mr Ayoola Dominic, a pharmacist and first son of the deceased, made the announcement while receiving guests after his father’s burial.
“We felt that if late Dominic could help people while alive, we should continue doing so in his memory; hence, the birth of Michael Dominic Foundation aimed at helping people of 70 years of age and above.
“We want to ensure that a lot of our elderly do not die because of lack of access to COVID-19 vaccine,” he said.
According to him, the foundation will get the elderly registered and vaccinated against COVID-19.
Ayoola said that although the foundation would be funded by the PDP chairman’s children, there was the need for volunteers and support from Nigerians to register the elderly.
He said that Dr Dominic Hospital, Santa Maria, would be helpful in fulfilling the mandate of the foundation.
“My dad was worthy of emulation, he was someone who wanted to help people all his life. One thing he always did well was helping people. He was into politics to help the poor. We want Dr Dominic’s dream to live forever,” he said.
Mrs Deborah Dominic, the widow, said that her late husband would never be forgotten for his acts of kindness, philanthropy and love for the people.
“At times, we had a lot of issues with him in billings. We didn’t like him consulting, because he didn’t care about how much we bought drugs, as he gave bills at very low rates or free.
“When I gave the bills and the patients took it to him, he would slash it, not minding the cost of what the nurses and doctors had put in.
“He didn’t care about the money, but life first,” she said.
The widow said that the family had resolved to continue with the legacy of the late politician.
Similarly, Dr Funmi Olaoye, the first daughter of late Dominic, said that her father would be remembered for his honesty, large heart and uprightness.
“He was a goal getter and a very hard-working man who always loved to help the people, especially the poor.
“We are aware that he had made a lot of impacts in his community, home and abroad, and people keep talking about him.
“We believe he lived a great life and a fulfilled life as a politician, medical doctor, philanthropist, helper and lover of people.
“People should learn from him that one can still be upright and be in politics..One can be honest and still be a politician,” Olaoye said.
Also, a neighbour to late Dominic, Mr Davies Fagbola, described the late medical doctor as a philanthropist.
He recalled that when most people on the street went for medical treatment, he either treated them free or reduced the bill.
Mr Abdul-Azeez Akinsanya, a former PDP House of Representatives candidate in Alimosho, described the late Dominic as a honest and upright bridge builder who was interested only in the welfare of the people.
In the same light, PDP Spokesman in Lagos State, Mr Taofik Gani, said that the late party chieftain would be remembered for so many godly roles he played in the lives of many.
Gani said: “It must be mentioned that Dominic was perhaps one of the few who joined politics to partake selflessly.
“He turned his private medical practice into public service, treating many patients free of charge. He put a lot on monthly salaries, and as chairman of PDP, Dominic was not of a desperate tendency.
“He got poorer in wealth because he had to sell personal property to fund the party; some persons would rather steal from the party.
“Dr Dominic will remain immortalized in many homes.” (NAN)
