NDC Presidential candidate, Peter Obi
Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to take responsibility for rebuilding the country, warning that the nation’s future depends on the quality of leadership chosen in the coming elections.
Obi made the call on Sunday after interacting with Nigerians living in Manchester, United Kingdom, where he discussed concerns about the country and the need for collective action towards building what he described as a “New Nigeria.”
The former Anambra State Governor, said Nigerians at home and abroad must work together to address the challenges facing the country.
“The task of building a New Nigeria remains our collective responsibility, and there is no better time to roll up our sleeves and get to work than now,” Obi said.
He expressed concern over what he described as years of corruption and leadership failures, saying they had slowed Nigeria’s development despite the country’s enormous resources and potential.
According to him, Nigeria has the capacity to become one of the world’s most developed nations if the challenges of poor leadership and corruption are properly addressed.
“Nigeria remains one of the most blessed countries in the world and would have taken its place among the most developed countries if not for corruption and the leadership failure bedevilling it,” he said.
Obi stressed that leadership quality plays a major role in determining the progress of any nation, adding that those entrusted with public offices must possess the right character, competence and commitment.
“No nation, as I have always maintained, can rise above the character, competence, capacity and commitment of those entrusted with its leadership,” he said.
He urged Nigerians to approach the 2027 general election with seriousness, describing it as an opportunity to decide the direction of the country.
“That is why we must approach the coming general elections as a race for national survival rather than another routine exercise. It is our collective battle,” Obi said.
Obi’s comments come ahead of the 2027 general elections, where political parties and major contenders are expected to intensify campaigns and mobilise support across Nigeria and the diaspora. He ended his message by urging Nigerians to unite for the emergence of a better country, saying a “New Nigeria” is possible.
