Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens Football Club and their officials with ₦50 million following the team’s successful campaign in the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) and the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.
The governor announced the cash reward while celebrating the club’s achievements in a message shared on his official social media platforms on Tuesday.
He praised the players, coaches, technical crew and management for their determination throughout the season, describing their success as proof of what commitment and hard work can achieve.
“Our young women are showing the world what determination, discipline and hard work can achieve,” the governor said.
Reflecting on the team’s latest accomplishment, Okpebholo said he was delighted to celebrate the champions after they secured both domestic and regional titles.
“Today, I celebrated our victorious @EdoQueensFC following their outstanding triumph in the 2025/26 Nigeria Women’s Football League and the 2026 WAFU-B Women’s Champions League.”
The governor singled out the team’s dramatic penalty shootout victory over Ghana’s Ampem Darkoa Ladies in the WAFU-B Women’s Champions League final, commending their courage under pressure.
“I commend the players, coaches, technical crew and management for their resilience and fighting spirit, especially their impressive performance in the decisive penalty shootout against Ampem Darkoa Ladies of Ghana.”
To honour the achievement, Okpebholo announced a ₦50 million cash reward for the team and its officials.
“To appreciate their hard work and achievement, I have rewarded the team and their officials with ₦50 million.”
According to the governor, the success of Edo Queens extends beyond football trophies, saying it reflects the immense potential of young Nigerians when provided with adequate support.
“This victory is more than just two trophies. It is a proud moment for Edo State and Nigeria, and a reminder of what our young people can achieve when they are given the right support and opportunities.”
Expressing confidence in the club’s future, he said the players have what it takes to compete successfully across the continent.
“I am proud of our girls and confident that they can go even further and conquer Africa.
“Congratulations, Edo Queens! You have made Edo proud.”
