Cole Palmer
Cole Palmer has withdrawn from the England squad ahead of the September international break after suffering a minor muscle injury.
Palmer was named in Thomas Tuchel’s squad on Friday, September 18, for England’s Nations League fixtures, marking his return to the team after missing the 2026 World Cup.
But the Chelsea forward will now sit out the international window, with reports indicating that the decision is precautionary as he manages his fitness.
Palmer played the full 90 minutes in Chelsea’s 3-0 defeat to Brentford on Friday night.
The 24-year-old had made an impressive start to the season, scoring four goals and providing two assists in seven appearances.
His withdrawal comes after an injury-hit 2025-26 campaign in which a recurring groin problem restricted him to 24 Premier League starts.
That history has made Palmer’s fitness a priority for Chelsea, particularly with the forward having previously spoken about his desire to stay injury-free.
For Tuchel, the timing is frustrating. Palmer had been recalled as part of England’s plans for the new Nations League campaign and was expected to play a key role in the upcoming fixtures.
England will face Spain at Wembley on September 26 before taking on Czechia and Croatia during the international window.
Palmer will now remain with Chelsea as he works on his recovery, with the club taking no chances over a problem that could become more serious if aggravated.
