Residents of Asarara Kaura community in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State have heaved a sigh of relief after troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA recovered a large herd of cattle rustled by suspected terrorists during a successful military operation.
The operation followed credible intelligence on the movement of armed terrorists in the area. Acting on the information, troops of Sector 2, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, swiftly mobilised to the community to stop the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.
According to the military, the terrorists had invaded the community, frightened residents and rustled a large number of cattle before attempting to escape through the Tambuwal-Gadaichi-Gummi Road axis.
However, the troops intercepted the fleeing suspects, leading to a gun battle.
The attackers reportedly opened fire on the advancing soldiers but were overpowered by the troops’ superior response. Under intense pressure, the terrorists fled into nearby bushes, abandoning the entire herd. Some of the fleeing suspects were believed to have sustained gunshot wounds.
The successful operation sparked celebrations in the community as residents commended the troops for their timely intervention and professionalism.
For many rural families in Sokoto and other parts of the North-West, cattle are more than livestock. They represent a major source of income, food security and family wealth. Their recovery therefore brings hope to victims and helps to reduce the economic impact of cattle rustling, which has remained one of the crimes linked to insecurity in the region.
The Nigerian Army said the recovered animals have been secured in military custody pending their formal handover to the Chairman of the Sokoto State Committee on the Recovery of Rustled Animals.
The committee is expected to verify the ownership of the livestock before returning them to their rightful owners.
The latest operation is part of the ongoing offensive by Operation FANSAN YAMMA against terrorism, banditry and cattle rustling across the North-West, as security forces continue efforts to restore peace and protect lives and livelihoods in affected communities.
