The arrested suspects
Five men have been remanded in a correctional facility in Maiduguri after they were arrested for allegedly printing and wearing T-shirts bearing the inscription, “Tinubu Must Go.”
The Borno State Police Command charged the suspects with criminal conspiracy, inciting disturbance, breach of public peace and thuggery.
Police said the men allegedly printed the T-shirts and planned to use them around the West End Roundabout area on September 25.
The suspects are Baba Aji Gremami, Mustapha Abba Yemen, Abbacha Mohammed Ali, Adam Umar Gubio and Abdulhamid Mohammed.
According to the First Information Report dated September 29, the alleged offences violate Sections 60, 78, 79 and 392 of the Borno State Penal Code.
The police later arraigned the suspects before a Chief Magistrate Court in Maiduguri, where they were remanded pending further proceedings.
A source also claimed the arrests followed a directive allegedly issued by Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum to the state Commissioner of Police, though the government has not officially commented on the claim.
Authorities have also not released details of the court’s remand order or the next hearing date.
The case comes at a time when political activities are gathering momentum across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has drawn attention to the balance between maintaining public order and protecting citizens’ rights to freedom of expression as the legal process continues.
