Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has called for stronger support from its alumni, government and other stakeholders as the institution marks its 64th anniversary.
The university, established on October 4, 1962, is celebrating 64 years of contributions to education, research, innovation and national development.
The institution was established following the recommendations of the Ashby Commission on Post-School Certificate and Higher Education, which in 1959 recommended the creation of a university in Zaria to serve the then Northern Region of Nigeria.
The university was named after Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and Premier of the Northern Region, who became its first Chancellor and performed the opening ceremony on October 4, 1962.
Speaking on the anniversary, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, said ABU had, since its establishment, made significant contributions to national, regional and global development.
He expressed appreciation to parents, guardians, alumni and other well-wishers for sustaining the strong relationship between the university and the wider society.
The vice-chancellor also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as far-reaching reforms and strategic interventions in the education sector, saying several of the initiatives had positively impacted the university.
Prof. Ahmed particularly thanked ABU alumni, both individuals and organised groups, for their continued support to the institution in various areas.
He also expressed appreciation to the governors of Kaduna, Zamfara and Katsina states for their consistent engagement, support and commitment to addressing the university’s needs.
The vice-chancellor further acknowledged the guidance of the Emir of Zazzau and contributions of the Minister of Education, the Chancellor, Pro-Chancellor, members of the Governing Council and Senate, as well as staff and students of the university.
Prof. Ahmed said as ABU continued on its path of progress, the institution would require greater support from its alumni and other stakeholders to strengthen its capacity to continue serving Nigeria and humanity.
