Peter Obi
The All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Council has criticised Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, over his recent claim that he won the last presidential poll despite admitting he had no evidence to support it.
The council described Obi’s comments as misleading and accused him of ignoring the outcome of the election as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and upheld by the courts.
In a statement issued on Friday by its spokesman, Dele Alake, the APC said Obi’s position was inconsistent with the facts and official records of the 2023 presidential election.
The council referred to Obi’s recent interview with the BBC where he said: “I don’t like going back to the past. I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election. Everything is not based on evidence.”
Reacting to the comment, the APC said it was wrong for anyone seeking public office to make serious claims without proof, adding that such a position undermines truth and accountability.
The ruling party also said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election and that the result was declared by INEC before being affirmed by the Election Petition Tribunal and the Supreme Court.
According to the APC, Tinubu has since focused on implementing reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, expanding infrastructure, improving education and healthcare, supporting businesses, creating jobs and providing opportunities for young Nigerians.
The council further urged Obi to honour what it described as his earlier promise to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it was established that his administration left liabilities in Anambra State.
It claimed that the financial records of Anambra State had confirmed the existence of such liabilities, although it did not provide details in the statement.
