Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany
Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany has been taken to hospital after collapsing while watching the club’s second team train at Säbener Straße on Friday.
Bayern confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the Belgian would undergo further medical examinations and remain under medical care. His coaching staff will handle training and match operations while he receives treatment.
Sky Germany reported that Kompany was in a stable condition after being taken to a Munich hospital by ambulance.
The incident comes after a difficult week for the 40-year-old, who had been battling a viral infection and missed media duties earlier in the week.
Kompany returned to the touchline for Bayern’s Champions League clash against Arsenal on Wednesday, but later admitted that he had continued working despite being unwell.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body, and then at some point my body said: Stop now!” he said after the match.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said the club’s priority was Kompany’s health, with his assistants stepping in to oversee the team in his absence.
The coach’s collapse came just days after his admission that he had pushed himself despite feeling ill. However, Bayern have not established any link between the viral infection and Friday’s incident.
The club has yet to give a timeline for his return as he undergoes further medical checks.
