Ogun State Police Command has foiled a suspected cult initiation involving secondary school students in Owode-Yewa, arresting three suspects and recovering dangerous weapons during a security operation.
The suspects, aged 12, 18 and 18, were arrested after the police received intelligence about a planned cult-related gathering known as “Kito Day,” which allegedly involved students from different secondary schools in the area.
According to the police, the operation followed credible information received on October 22, 2026, prompting the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Owode-Yewa to immediately mobilise detectives to the location.
The police team carried out the operation in collaboration with members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria.
During the raid, officers recovered one English axe, two knives, one short cutlass, one rubber toy gun and a school bag believed to have been used by the suspects.
The Ogun State Police Command said the swift intervention prevented the suspected initiation from taking place and helped avert a possible breakdown of law and order in the community.
Police added that the case would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Eleweran, Abeokuta, on October 23, 2026, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The command urged parents, teachers and community leaders to pay closer attention to the activities of young people and report suspicious movements to security agencies promptly.
Cultism has remained a major security concern in several parts of Nigeria, with law enforcement agencies intensifying efforts to prevent the recruitment of young people into violent cult groups, especially within schools and local communities. The latest operation underscores the importance of intelligence sharing and community collaboration in tackling crime before it escalates.
