The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Kaduna State, Rt. Hon. Shehu Usman Bawa, has criticised the worsening security situation in the state, saying the government must move beyond statements and demonstrate leadership through concrete action.
Bawa, who spoke against the backdrop of the latest attack and abductions in the state, described the incident as “one attack too many,” expressing sympathy to families of those abducted as well as relatives of victims who lost their lives in recent attacks.
He said the recurring incidents underscored the need for a fundamental change in the way security was approached in Kaduna, arguing that the safety of citizens must remain at the centre of government policy.
According to him, his administration, if elected on the PDP’s “People Agenda,” would make community security a major foundation of governance by giving citizens a more active role in the state’s security architecture.
“Kaduna cannot be secure by press statements. It will be secure by deliberate, inclusive and sustained action,” he said.
The PDP candidate said his proposed approach would involve closer collaboration between government, security agencies and communities, stressing that residents were often in the best position to provide early information on threats within their localities.
Bawa said effective security required a government that was responsive to the concerns of ordinary citizens and capable of coordinating relevant institutions to prevent attacks rather than merely reacting after lives and property had been lost.
He further called for stronger community engagement, intelligence gathering and sustained security operations, saying these measures were necessary to restore confidence among residents and create an environment conducive to economic activities.
The PDP candidate also urged security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue those abducted and bring perpetrators of attacks to justice, saying families affected by insecurity deserved more than expressions of sympathy.
He maintained that the PDP’s “People Agenda” would place the welfare and security of citizens at the heart of governance, promising to pursue policies aimed at building safer communities and restoring public confidence in government.
Bawa said Kaduna could overcome its security challenges if political leadership was matched with decisive action, accountability and genuine partnership between government and the people.
