Delta State Police Command has recorded fresh breakthroughs in its ongoing fight against crime, recovering a locally made firearm after a failed robbery attack in Effurun and arresting a suspected drug peddler with quantities of suspected illicit substances in Agbor.
The Command’s spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed the developments in a statement issued on Tuesday, saying the operations were carried out separately by police operatives in Effurun and Agbor.
According to the statement, the first incident occurred in the early hours of September 4 when two masked men, one of them armed with a locally made shotgun, invaded the residence of a 48-year-old man in the Charlisco area along NPA Express Road, Effurun.
Rather than surrender, the homeowner reportedly confronted one of the attackers in a struggle that caused the firearm to break.
During the confrontation, the second suspect allegedly struck the victim on the forehead before the two men fled the scene, abandoning the damaged weapon.
The incident was reported at Ekpan Police Division shortly after the attack, prompting the Divisional Police Officer to deploy operatives to the scene.
Police recovered the broken locally made firearm, while the injured victim was taken to a hospital for treatment. Authorities said efforts are underway to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
In a separate operation on September 6, operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit (SAKU), Ubulu-Uku, acting on credible intelligence, arrested a 40-year-old woman identified as Joy Anthony in Agbor over alleged drug trafficking.
Police said officers executed a search warrant at her residence in Agbor-Obi, where they recovered quantities of Swinol, Tramadol, Codeine, Canadian Loud, and weeds suspected to be Indian hemp.
The suspect and the recovered exhibits remain in police custody as investigations continue.
Reacting to the incidents, the Commissioner of Police, Delta State Command, CP Samuel E. Erale, praised the bravery displayed by the robbery victim.
The police statement quoted the Commissioner as commending the “48yrs old courageous man who fought off the suspected criminals while assuring him that the suspects will be tracked down and arrested.”
He also appealed to residents to support law enforcement by providing useful information that could assist in tackling crime across the state.
