HBM Nigeria Plc has strengthened its commitment to cleaner energy and efficient transportation with the commissioning of a high-capacity Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) station at its Mfamosing Plant in Cross River State.
The newly inaugurated facility is expected to improve the company’s logistics operations by increasing fueling capacity, reducing truck waiting times and enhancing fleet efficiency.
In its first phase, the station can fuel up to 150 CNG-powered trucks daily, with an installed capacity of 144,000 standard cubic metres of compressed natural gas each day. Designed for continuous 24-hour operations, the facility is equipped with two pumps and four dispensing points to ensure faster refueling and improved truck turnaround.
HBM Nigeria said the second phase of the project, scheduled for completion in October 2026, will raise the station’s daily capacity to about 250 trucks.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Cross River State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Pastor Ekpeyong Ene Cobhams, described the project as a major milestone and commended HBM Nigeria for investing in cleaner energy solutions.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to maintaining an investment-friendly environment that encourages businesses to thrive.
According to him, the transition to cleaner energy is essential for improving efficiency in the movement of goods and services, while also contributing to sustainable development.
He also praised the company for its continued commitment to corporate social responsibility.
The Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of HBM Nigeria Plc, Lolu Alade-Akinyemi, said the commissioning of the CNG station reflects the company’s long-term focus on operational excellence, sustainability and cost efficiency.
He noted that energy and logistics remain among the biggest cost components of the company’s operations, adding that expanding the use of compressed natural gas would help lower operating costs while improving overall efficiency.
Alade-Akinyemi said the investment also aligns with the Federal Government’s push for cleaner energy alternatives through increased adoption of CNG.
He added that the project would create more opportunities for host communities, transport partners, customers and other stakeholders across Cross River State and Nigeria.
Also speaking, the company’s Logistics Director, Osaze Aghatise, said HBM Nigeria had been deploying CNG-powered trucks in its logistics operations for the past nine years, but the new facility marks the transition from limited deployment to large-scale operations.
He explained that beyond expanding fueling capacity, the project would significantly reduce queues at fueling points, improve truck availability and enable quicker deliveries to customers.
Aghatise described the facility as another key milestone in the company’s logistics transformation programme, which focuses on operational efficiency, improved asset utilisation, faster delivery and environmentally sustainable transportation.
He also acknowledged the support of the company’s leadership, saying the project was made possible by the commitment of the Chief Executive Officer to invest in long-term innovations that will shape the future of HBM Nigeria’s operations.
The Procurement Director of HBM Nigeria, Gabriel Ibiyemi, said the Mfamosing CNG station demonstrates the value of strategic sourcing and strong collaboration in delivering critical infrastructure.
Representing transport operators, the Managing Director of Joza Global Logistics Limited, Emmanuel Usiakpor, described the facility as a major boost for transporters, noting that it would improve efficiency and reduce operational challenges associated with fueling.
Among dignitaries present at the commissioning were the Cross River State Commissioner for Mineral Resources (Solid Minerals), Ntufam Effiom-Ekaha Otu; the Village Head of Mfamosing, Ntufam Paul Ntui; and members of the Cross River State House of Assembly.
