The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has directed all Nigeria Police Force (NPF) commands and formations to fly their flags at half-mast in honour of 25 lives lost in the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) 931 aircraft accident in Ondo State.
The directive followed the tragic crash of the NAF 931 aircraft on October 5, 2026, in the Igbokoda area of Ondo State, which claimed the lives of military personnel and passengers.
The Nigeria Police Force, through a statement shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, said the gesture was to show solidarity with the Nigerian Air Force and the families of the deceased.
The IGP, on behalf of the police force, expressed deep sympathy to the Chief of the Air Staff, officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force, as well as the bereaved families.
“On behalf of the Nigeria Police Force, I extend my deepest condolences to the Chief of the Air Staff, the officers and men of the Nigerian Air Force, and the bereaved families,” the IGP said.
As part of the mourning activities, all police commands and formations, including the Force Headquarters in Abuja, will fly flags at half-mast from October 6 to October 8, 2026.
The IGP said the decision was a mark of respect for the fallen personnel and a demonstration of the bond between Nigeria’s security agencies.
“As a mark of respect for the departed and in solidarity with the Nigerian Air Force, all Nigeria Police Commands and Formations, including Force Headquarters, Abuja will fly flags at half-mast during the three-day mourning period, from 6th to 8th October 2026,” he stated.
The police chief praised the courage and sacrifice of the deceased personnel, assuring their families and colleagues that their contributions to national service would remain remembered.
“Their courage, service and sacrifice will not be forgotten. We stand with their families and colleagues in this moment of grief,” the IGP added.
The Nigeria Police Force also prayed for comfort and strength for the families affected by the tragedy.
“May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace, and may God grant their loved ones the strength to bear this painful loss,” the statement concluded.
The Nigerian Air Force has continued to receive condolences from government officials, security agencies and Nigerians following the crash, as the country mourns the loss of the personnel.
