Imo State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Ifeanyi Chukwu Joseph, for allegedly pushing his girlfriend’s 17-year-old sister from a two-storey building in Owerri after she reportedly rejected his sexual advance.
The teenage victim, Chiamaka Chukwuokore, sustained severe injuries in the incident and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital, where she remains in critical condition.
The incident occurred on November 1, 2026, at Mbonu Ejike Street in the Ikeneagbu area of Owerri.
According to the police, preliminary investigation revealed that the suspect allegedly made a sexual advance towards the teenager, but she turned him down. An argument reportedly followed before he allegedly pushed her from the two-storey building.
The incident attracted angry residents, who reportedly attempted to lynch the suspect. However, police operatives quickly intervened, rescued him from the mob and took him into custody.
The Imo State Police Command said the suspect is undergoing investigation as detectives work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and ensure that justice is served.
The Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Garba Bosso, assured residents that the command would carry out a thorough investigation and that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and allow the law to take its course, warning against taking the law into their own hands.
The case has again drawn attention to the growing concern over violence against women and children in Nigeria, with rights advocates calling for stronger protection of minors and swift prosecution of offenders. The suspect remains in police custody while investigations continue.
