The youth leadership of the Labour Party has begun moves to align with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, citing the need for greater youth inclusion and political opportunities.
The decision followed a virtual meeting held on October 2, 2026, involving the party’s National Youth Leader, Prince Kennedy Ahanotu, National Zonal Youth Leaders and State Youth Leaders to review the party’s political direction ahead of the next general elections.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by Edo State Youth Leader, Comrade Ken Omusi, on behalf of participants, the meeting proposed opening consultations with the APC, the Renewed Hope Movement, the City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups on a possible political alignment.
During the meeting, some youth leaders expressed dissatisfaction with what they described as “inadequate recognition, total negligence, lack of engagements and no support for the youth constituency during and after the 2023 general elections where they laboured in vain for a presidential candidate who lacked the skills to consolidate.”
The participants said they wanted a political platform and leadership that would create more opportunities for youth participation, leadership development, economic empowerment and inclusion in national decision-making.
The statement said the meeting also reviewed the policies of President Tinubu’s administration in areas including human capital development, youth empowerment, economic reforms, infrastructure, healthcare, education, security, agriculture and workers’ welfare. It noted that participants expressed different views on the programmes and their implications for Nigeria’s development.
Following the discussions, the youth leaders directed Prince Kennedy Ahanotu to begin consultations immediately with stakeholders in the APC, the Renewed Hope Movement, the City Boy Movement and Tinubu Support Groups to explore possible collaboration ahead of the 2027 elections.
They also expressed confidence in Ahanotu’s leadership and asked him to drive the consultation process while ensuring broad-based consultations and consensus among the party’s youth leadership.
The meeting further proposed a physical gathering of Labour Party youth leaders in Abuja on a date to be agreed upon to review the outcome of the consultations and decide on the next steps regarding the proposed political realignment.
The statement described the move as part of an ongoing internal dialogue among Labour Party youth leaders on political participation, strategic partnerships and the role of young Nigerians in shaping the country’s political future.
The development comes as political parties and support groups continue early consultations and realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with youth mobilisation expected to play a major role in the build-up to the polls.
