Liverpool have finally broken through Paris Saint-Germain’s resistance to Bradley Barcola, reaching an agreement to sign the France international in a deal that could rise to €140 million.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano broke the news on Thursday, reporting that Liverpool and PSG had agreed a deal worth an initial £100 million, with add-ons capable of taking the total package to €140 million if all conditions are met.
The agreement ends weeks of uncertainty over Barcola’s future, with PSG previously making it clear that the highly rated winger was not readily available and maintaining a huge valuation for the 23-year-old.
Liverpool, however, refused to walk away.
The Reds had identified Barcola as a priority target and remained keen despite PSG’s firm stance and the size of the fee involved. Barcola’s desire for the move also helped shift the balance, with the Frenchman now expected to complete his switch to Anfield on a long-term contract.
According to Romano, the final formalities are already being lined up, with the two clubs expected to exchange the necessary documents within the next 24 hours. Barcola is then expected to sign his long-term Liverpool contract this weekend, subject to the completion of the remaining procedures.
For Liverpool, the move is more than simply adding another winger to the squad. The size of the investment underlines just how highly the club rates Barcola and the role he is expected to play in its attack.
At 23, Barcola still has considerable room for development, but the fee means expectations will be immediate. A £100 million initial investment, potentially rising to €140 million, puts pressure on the winger to deliver and justify the confidence Liverpool have shown in him.
His arrival is also likely to reshape competition within Liverpool’s attack, with places becoming harder to secure once the Frenchman settles into the squad. The move therefore represents both a major reinforcement and a clear statement of Liverpool’s ambition in the transfer market.
For PSG, meanwhile, the agreement brings an end to their resistance over a player they had previously been reluctant to sell. Liverpool’s willingness to push the negotiations to such financial heights has eventually turned a difficult transfer into one of the biggest deals of the summer.
Barcola is now expected to complete the move this weekend, with Liverpool and PSG working to conclude the remaining formalities before the French winger puts pen to paper at Anfield.
