Moroccan female Prime Minister, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri
Morocco has made history with the appointment of Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri as the country’s first woman Prime Minister.
King Mohammed VI appointed El Mansouri, a former mayor of Marrakech and current Housing Minister, following the victory of her Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) in the September 23 parliamentary election.
The party emerged as the largest political group in the 395-member parliament after securing 97 seats, paving the way for El Mansouri’s nomination in line with Morocco’s constitutional process.
The new Prime Minister has been mandated to begin consultations and form a coalition government, as PAM did not win enough seats to govern alone.
El Mansouri’s appointment marks a significant breakthrough for women’s participation in Morocco’s political leadership and makes her the second woman to head a government in the Arab world after Tunisia’s Najla Bouden.
A lawyer by training, El Mansouri previously served as mayor of Marrakech before becoming Minister of National Territorial Planning, Urban Planning, Housing and City Policy.
Her administration is expected to tackle key national issues, including economic reforms, job creation, social welfare programmes and preparations for Morocco’s hosting role in the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.
