The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has uncovered an illegal herbal products manufacturing facility in Agege, Lagos State, where herbal drinks were allegedly produced and sold using falsified NAFDAC registration numbers.
The discovery followed an investigation launched after The Guardian newspaper published a report on October 10, 2026, raising concerns over herbal products carrying suspected fake NAFDAC registration numbers.
Acting on the report, a NAFDAC investigative team carried out surveillance at the facility and uncovered three variants of Asheitu Adams Bitters bearing the registration number A7-1827L.
Further checks on the agency’s NAFDAC Automated Products Administration and Monitoring System (NAPAMS) showed that the registration number actually belongs to Greentol Cough Syrup, confirming that it had been fraudulently used on the herbal products.
During the enforcement operation, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the company was not found at the premises. However, the company manager was arrested and taken into custody for further interrogation as investigations continue.
The agency said the operation forms part of its ongoing efforts to rid the Nigerian market of fake, unregistered and unsafe products that could endanger public health.
NAFDAC urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and always verify the authenticity of regulated products before purchasing or consuming them. The agency also called on members of the public to report any suspected illegal manufacturing activities.
It said credible information can be reported through the NAFDAC Call Centre on 0800-1-623322 or 0700-1-623322, or by email at reforms@nafdac.gov.ng.
The latest discovery highlights NAFDAC’s sustained crackdown on counterfeit and illegally manufactured products, as the agency intensifies efforts to protect consumers and ensure that only safe, quality and properly registered products are available in the Nigerian market.
