Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has raised concerns over the Federal High Court judgment that nullified the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) led by former Senate President David Mark, warning that such developments could negatively affect Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., the opposition party said it respected the judiciary as the last hope of the common man but expressed concern that judgments affecting political parties must be handled carefully to avoid creating doubts about democratic processes.
The NDC alleged that the frequency of recent court decisions involving opposition parties could create the impression that legal institutions were being used to weaken political competition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the party, any action that reduces the strength of opposition voices could further threaten democratic participation in the country.
The statement urged the judiciary to continue protecting its independence, impartiality and integrity, stressing that courts must remain above political influence.
The party also advised the ADC to immediately appeal the judgment and called on the appellate court to consider an accelerated hearing because of the approaching 2027 elections.
The NDC said resolving the leadership dispute quickly would help prevent uncertainty and ensure that all political parties have equal opportunities to participate in Nigeria’s electoral process.
