North East Development Commission (NEDC) has announced plans to introduce electric buses, vehicles and tricycles in Taraba State to reduce transportation costs, create jobs and support economic growth.
The commission made this known on Monday during a stakeholders’ sensitisation workshop on the deployment and operation of electric mobility, also known as E-Mobility, in Taraba State.
The initiative is aimed at promoting a cleaner and more sustainable transport system while reducing environmental pollution across the state.
Managing Director of the NEDC, Muhammed G. Alkali, who was represented by the Taraba State Coordinator of the commission, Mallam Adamu Lawal, said the project would make transportation more affordable and improve the lives of residents.
He said, “The initiative was designed to connect communities, expand economic opportunities, empower residents and improve the overall quality of life across the state.”
Alkali added, “The electric mobility programme aligns with the pillars of its master plan, particularly connected regions and protected environment, which seek to improve regional connectivity and promote environmental sustainability.”
He also said the adoption of electric mobility would reduce commuting costs, encourage innovation and open up new employment opportunities for people in the state.
According to him, “The success of the initiative would depend on effective collaboration among stakeholders, collective commitment and the ability to translate the opportunities offered by electric mobility into practical and sustainable outcomes.”
He urged participants at the workshop to contribute their expertise, ideas and resources to ensure the successful deployment, efficient operation and long-term sustainability of the programme across Taraba State.
The commission stressed that close cooperation among government agencies, the private sector and other stakeholders would be necessary to maximise the economic and environmental benefits of the initiative.
Electric mobility is becoming an important part of modern transportation around the world because it helps reduce dependence on fossil fuels, lowers carbon emissions and cuts the cost of transport over time.
The NEDC expressed confidence that the programme would serve as a catalyst for sustainable development, economic expansion and environmental protection in Taraba State while improving access to safe and affordable transportation for residents.
