Senate President Godswill Akpabio
President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s 66th Independence Anniversary, praising their resilience and calling for greater unity as the nation continues its journey of growth and development.
In an Independence Day message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Eseme Eyiboh, the Senate President described Nigeria as “our destiny, our duty, our future,” while paying tribute to the nation’s founding fathers for the sacrifices they made to secure independence.
Akpabio said the country’s history has been marked by both successes and challenges, but noted that Nigerians have continued to show courage, determination and hope despite difficult times.
He stressed that the strength of Nigeria is reflected in the daily efforts of ordinary citizens, including farmers, teachers, entrepreneurs and young people, whose contributions continue to shape the nation’s future.
The Senate President urged Nigerians to renew their commitment to peaceful coexistence by embracing one another across ethnic, religious and cultural differences. He said unity remains essential for building a stronger and more prosperous country.
He also commended members of the Armed Forces for their sacrifices in defending Nigeria’s unity and protecting its citizens, describing their service as vital to national peace and stability.
Akpabio assured Nigerians that the National Assembly would continue to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in pursuing policies and reforms aimed at strengthening the country and improving the lives of citizens.
Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The annual celebration provides an opportunity for leaders and citizens to reflect on the nation’s progress, honour those who contributed to its development and renew their commitment to unity, democracy and sustainable national development.
