Former President Goodluck Jonathan
Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on Nigerians to remain united, hopeful and committed to building a better country as the nation celebrates its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Jonathan said the country’s history shows that Nigerians have always overcome difficult times through resilience and collective determination. He urged citizens not to lose faith despite the nation’s social and economic challenges.
In his Independence Day message, the former President reflected on Nigeria’s journey since gaining independence and stressed the need for unity and patriotism.
“Today, our nation marks another significant milestone in its journey of nationhood. Sixty-six years ago, we secured our independence and took our destiny into our own hands,” Jonathan said.
He added, “Through the years, Nigeria has faced numerous challenges, but through our collective resilience, we have always emerged triumphant.”
Jonathan urged Nigerians to continue believing in the country and work together for a brighter future.
“As we reflect on this journey, let us remain steadfast in faith and hope, and continue to work in unity,” he said.
Looking ahead to the next general elections, Jonathan appealed to politicians and citizens to protect Nigeria’s democracy by promoting peace and justice.
“In a few months, we will enter another electoral season, a period that will test our democratic maturity. I urge all Nigerians to remain patriotic and prioritize actions that safeguard peace, unity, and justice,” he stated.
The former President expressed confidence that Nigeria could achieve sustainable development if its people effectively utilise the country’s rich human and natural resources.
“The years ahead hold immense possibilities, provided we harness our diversity and our abundant natural and human resources to drive sustainable development,” he said.
Jonathan also encouraged young people not to give up on the country.
“To our youth and fellow citizens, let us maintain hope, show courage, and work with faith toward a better country that guarantees a prosperous future for generations to come,” he added.
The former President, however, said leaders across the country must demonstrate greater responsibility and patriotism to address Nigeria’s challenges.
“Yet, for this future to be realized, leadership must rise to the occasion. To leaders at all levels, this moment demands absolute responsibility and deeper patriotism.
“We must confront our pressing social and economic challenges by prioritizing personal sacrifice, good governance, accountability, and strict adherence to the rule of law.
“Let us remain dedicated, showing greater commitment and sacrifice in national service to build a truly peaceful, secure, and equitable nation for ourselves and the generations ahead.”
