Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar and News Central's journalist, Umaru Yakubu Kirawa
Nigerian Army has honoured News Central Television Northeast Correspondent, Umaru Yakubu Kirawa, for his exceptional bravery and commitment to reporting on counter-terrorism operations and humanitarian issues in the North East.
Kirawa was decorated with the “Conflict Coverage Hero Award” by the Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar.
The Theatre Commander presented the award to Kirawa on Friday, September 12, 2026.
Speaking during the ceremony, Major General Abubakar commended journalists working in conflict zones for their sacrifice and professionalism. He said their work plays a critical role in keeping the public informed about the military’s efforts to restore peace and security.
He described Kirawa as a journalist who has consistently demonstrated courage in the line of duty, particularly in covering insecurity, humanitarian crises, and human-interest stories from the theatre of operations.
The Theatre Commander noted that the award was part of efforts to appreciate media professionals who risk their lives to document the realities of the insurgency and the progress made by troops.
Umaru Yakubu Kirawa is widely known for his on-the-ground reporting from the Northeast and other parts of the Lake Chad, where he has covered military operations, the plight of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and recovery efforts in communities affected by terrorism.
Receiving the award, Kirawa dedicated it to all journalists working in conflict zones across the country. He reaffirmed his commitment to objective reporting that highlights both the challenges and the successes in the fight against insurgency.
The ceremony highlights the growing recognition of the media’s role in national security, public enlightenment, and documenting the human impact of the conflict in the region.
