Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Barr. Venatius Ikem, has resigned from the party after serving for five years, saying it has lost direction.
Ikem announced his resignation in a letter addressed to the PDP National Headquarters in Abuja, with immediate effect.
He thanked the party’s national leadership, including former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Cross River, Prof. Sandy Onor, and other leaders for giving him the opportunity to serve.
The former state chairman said his decision followed what he described as the party’s prolonged internal crisis and lack of clear direction.
According to him, the PDP has continued to struggle with leadership challenges that have weakened its strength in Cross River State.
The party has suffered several defections since former Governor Ben Ayade left the PDP for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Many former members and supporters have also dumped the PDP for the APC in recent years.
Former Governor Liyel Imoke has also moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while former Governor Donald Duke is now associated with the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP).
Several other prominent party members have equally left the PDP, further reducing its political influence in Cross River.
Ikem’s exit leaves the PDP facing fresh uncertainty as it prepares for future political contests.
The development is expected to deepen concerns over the party’s ability to rebuild and remain competitive in Cross River State.
