Rivers State Police Command has launched a full investigation into the alleged renovation of the Abuloma Police Outpost by suspected cult members, following a viral video showing the group celebrating the completion of the project.
The Command, which described the development as unacceptable, said police facilities are public institutions that must remain free from any action capable of giving recognition or legitimacy to criminal groups.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Kaborlo, on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga A. Adepoju, the Command said it had taken note of the social media reports and video circulating online.
The Police said it strongly condemned any activity that could undermine the discipline, integrity and professional standards of the Nigeria Police Force.
“Police facilities are public institutions established for the protection of citizens and the enforcement of law and must not become platforms through which criminal groups seek public validation or influence,” the Command stated.
Following the controversy, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Abuloma Division and the Divisional Officer overseeing the affected outpost have been queried and removed from their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
The investigation will determine who financed or facilitated the renovation, whether proper approval was obtained, and if any police officer violated professional rules or compromised the image of the Force.
The Command also said it would investigate the identity and background of the individuals or groups linked to the renovation and establish the level of involvement of police personnel.
According to the Police, genuine community support for improving police facilities is allowed under Section 26(1)(d) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020, which permits gifts and contributions to the Police General Fund.
However, such support, the Command stressed, must not affect police independence, security responsibilities or professional standards.
“No donation or assistance confers immunity from investigation or prosecution,” the Command warned.
The Rivers Police Command assured residents that anyone found responsible for misconduct or improper association with criminal elements would face appropriate disciplinary and legal action.
It urged members of the public to remain calm and continue providing credible information that could assist security agencies in tackling cultism, organised crime and other security threats across the state.
The development comes amid continued efforts by security agencies in Rivers State to check the activities of cult groups and criminal networks, while maintaining public confidence in policing institutions.
