Afrobeat singer, Davido
Davido’s manager, Asa Asika, has described the Afrobeats star as one of the most influential Nigerians under 40, saying his impact extends beyond music into social media, business and popular culture.
Asika said Davido’s huge fan base, online presence and strong connection with audiences have made him one of the country’s most powerful entertainers.
Speaking about the singer’s influence, Asika said, “Davido is probably the most influential person from Nigeria below the age of 40, in my opinion.”
He explained that Davido’s social media presence remains unmatched among Nigerian entertainers, adding that “no argument” exists about the singer’s dominance online.
According to him, Davido is “probably the most followed artist on almost every social media platform,” a factor that has increased his appeal to global brands.
Asika said he often reminds Davido about the level of attention and influence he commands, joking that the singer’s status is almost comparable to that of a national figure.
“You do know you’re kind of like the president of Nigeria,” Asika said he tells the singer.
The music executive also spoke about Davido’s ability to recover from public controversies, noting that the singer’s strong relationship with fans has helped him remain relevant.
“There are some things I’ve seen Davido do and be like, if someone else did this, they would never ever get back from this. Sometimes I’m like, yeah, it’s over. I don’t know how we’re going to bounce back from this. And everybody wakes up tomorrow morning and they’re like, yeah, nothing happened,” he said.
Beyond entertainment, Asika described Davido as “a walking billboard”, explaining that many companies want to associate with the singer because of the attention his name generates.
“I have emails from brands being like, I just want Davido to like hold this bottle for 20 minutes or put in his video,” he said.
He added that some brands have contributed to funding Davido’s music projects because of the value they receive from being linked with his image and audience.
“I haven’t paid for music videos with our own money in ages,” Asika said.
According to him, Davido carefully chooses partnerships that fit his personality and brand, mentioning collaborations with Martell, Puma and a Chinese phone company as examples.
Asika said one of the deals involved a 10-year partnership, which later saw Davido’s image displayed on major billboards in African cities, including Abidjan, Mauritius and Tanzania.
Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, has remained one of the leading voices of Afrobeats, playing a major role in taking Nigerian music to audiences around the world.
