Imo State Police Command has clarified circumstances surrounding the viral video showing the assault of a young woman and her brother in Okigwe, announcing the arrest of two suspects allegedly involved in the incident.
The command said the armed men captured in the widely circulated footage were not police officers but personnel of the Imo State Vigilante Organization.
Police spokesperson, DSP Okoye Henry, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, explaining that the victims were reportedly travelling to Abia State University when they were attacked.
According to the statement, the suspects, identified as Ejiogu Nchekwube and Caleb Onyebuchi, have been taken into custody and are currently being held at the Okigwe Divisional Police Headquarters while investigations continue.
The statement noted that the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has assured residents that the command will ensure justice is served.
The police commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professionalism, accountability and the protection of citizens’ rights, stressing that anyone found responsible for the assault would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The command also appealed to members of the public to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information about the incident.
It urged residents to rely on official communication channels for authentic updates, assuring that further details would be made available as the ongoing investigation progresses.
